The Shopify Agentic Plan: $0 a Month, and One Unpublished Fee
Aisle map
The Shopify Agentic plan is the strangest thing on Shopify's price list and the one most worth understanding early, because it is the first plan the company has shipped with no subscription at all. It sells a catalogue through AI assistants without you publishing a storefront.
The $0 is real. It is also not the whole price, and one of the charges underneath it is not published anywhere a prospective merchant can read it.
What the plan actually is
It syndicates your product catalogue into AI channels — assistants that answer shopping questions — and into Shopify's own Shop channel, and handles checkout and payment when a sale results. You do not need a website, a domain, or a published Shopify storefront.
You can build a Shopify online store on the plan, but you cannot publish it or take checkout orders through it. Publishing means moving to a paid plan. Think of Agentic as a distribution channel with a payment layer, rather than as a cheaper version of Basic.
This is Shopify positioning for a shift in how product discovery works. Whether shoppers really will buy through assistants at scale is an open question, and nobody honest knows the answer yet — which is precisely what makes a zero-subscription entry point interesting.
What $0 a month covers
The subscription, and only the subscription. Shopify's own help documentation is unambiguous that the Agentic plan has no monthly subscription fee, and there is no trial period or introductory rate because there is nothing to introduce.
Payment processing is charged normally. Shopify Payments rates apply where a sale goes through Shopify-powered direct checkout, and third-party transaction fees apply if you process elsewhere. Independent summaries put the US rate at from 2.9% plus 30¢, which is Basic-equivalent — so a sale through an AI channel costs roughly what a sale on a $29 plan would, minus the $29.
The fee that is not published
Here is the part requiring attention. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms define an Agentic Storefronts Fee, charged per channel, on top of payment processing. The rate is not on the pricing page, not in the help documentation, and not in any public material we could find. It appears only inside a merchant's own admin, under Sales channels, once the plan is active.
Independent reporting has flagged this as a genuine disclosure gap, and the criticism is fair: a merchant cannot evaluate the economics of the plan before committing a catalogue to it, because one of the three fee layers is invisible until they are inside.
We are not going to guess at the number. What we will say is that a plan advertised as free with an unpublished per-channel transaction fee is presented more attractively than its structure warrants, and that anyone trying it should treat checking that rate as the first task rather than an afterthought.
The rate you cannot see before signing up is the rate to check first after you do. Open Sales channels, find the Agentic entry, and read the fee before pushing the rest of the catalogue.
What the plan excludes
Several things, and a couple will matter:
- Publishing an online store, or taking checkout orders on one
- Shopify Messaging, so the 10,000 free monthly emails other plans get are not part of this
- Gift card sales
- Manually created orders, which rules out phone and invoice sales
- Shop post-purchase offers
The manual-order exclusion is the sharp one. A business that occasionally takes an order by phone or email cannot process it here, and that is a common enough pattern to catch people out.
How it compares with Starter
The obvious question, since both are cheap entry points without a storefront. They are less similar than they look.
Starter costs $5 a month and charges 5% plus 30¢ on every sale, including through Shopify Payments. What it gives you is control: shareable product links you place yourself, on your own social accounts, in your own messages, to an audience you already have. You decide where the link goes.
Agentic costs nothing monthly and processes at around 2.9% plus 30¢, plus the unpublished per-channel fee. What it gives you is distribution you do not control: your catalogue appears in AI channels where somebody's question happens to match your product. You are not placing anything.
So the choice is not really about price. It is about whether you have an audience. A creator with fifteen thousand followers should be on Starter, because the constraint is a checkout rather than discovery. A merchant with good products and no audience is exactly who Agentic is built for, and the lower processing rate suits them — assuming the channel produces orders at all, which remains unproven.
There is no reason the two cannot run together, and for a small merchant testing both, that is arguably the sensible configuration. Our full assessment of the $5 tier is in the Shopify Starter plan review.
Who it is genuinely for
Two groups. Merchants already selling elsewhere — their own site, a marketplace, a physical shop — who want AI-channel distribution as an additional surface without paying a second platform subscription. And merchants curious about whether agentic shopping produces real orders, for whom $0 a month is the correct price of an experiment.
Who it is not for: anyone who needs a storefront. This is not a cheaper Basic and will not become one. If you want a website, the arithmetic in Shopify pricing, plan by plan applies and Basic is where you start.
How to try it sensibly
- Read the Agentic Storefronts Fee in your admin before syndicating anything.
- Add the fee to your processing rate and compare the total against your margin per product. Some catalogues will not survive the combination.
- Start with a subset of products rather than the whole catalogue.
- Track orders by channel from day one, because the entire question is whether this channel produces any.
- Reassess after a quarter. A free plan producing nothing still costs attention.
One genuine note of caution on dating. Sources disagree on when the plan launched — early 2026 by one account, spring by another — which is itself a sign of how lightly documented it is. Verify anything you read about it, including this, against your own admin. The platform-wide view is in our Shopify review.
