Shopify Plus Review: What $2,300 a Month Is For
Aisle map
Shopify Plus starts at around $2,300 a month, and the most useful thing to say about it is that no merchant should ever buy it for the processing rate. The arithmetic does not work and it is not close.
What Plus sells is access and terms — specific checkout capabilities that non-Plus merchants cannot reach, a multi-store allowance, and a contract rather than a plan. Whether that is worth $27,600 a year depends on whether you need any of it.
What it costs
Published figures put Plus at from $2,300 a month. Because it is a contract rather than a plan, the real number depends on volume, term and what is negotiated, and anyone quoting a precise universal figure is guessing.
One source mentions an introductory first month at $399. We have seen that in a single place and cannot corroborate it, so treat it as unconfirmed and get any introductory terms in writing from Shopify directly.
Why the rate argument fails
Advanced costs $299 a month on annual billing at 2.5% + 30¢. Plus costs from $2,300 at around 2.25% + 30¢. The subscription gap is roughly $2,000; the rate gap is about a quarter of a point.
$2,000 ÷ 0.0025 = $800,000 a month in card revenue before the rate saving covers the subscription. That is a business doing nearly ten million a year, and a business doing nearly ten million a year is negotiating its own rate anyway, which makes the published comparison academic.
So the honest framing: Plus is a cost, not a saving. Every justification has to come from capability. The tier arithmetic for everything below it is in which Shopify plan you should be on.
The checkout surfaces you cannot get elsewhere
This is the real product. Since checkout.liquid was retired, all checkout customisation runs through checkout extensibility — UI extensions, Shopify Functions and web pixels — and several of the most powerful Functions are Plus-only:
- Payment customisation — reordering, renaming or conditionally hiding payment methods at checkout
- Delivery customisation — the same control over shipping options
- Order routing — directing orders to particular locations or warehouses by rule
- Cart-transform — altering line items programmatically, which is how bundles and made-to-order configurations are built properly
If your business needs any of these, Plus is not expensive, it is the price. If none of them describes a problem you have, you are paying $2,300 a month for the option. What non-Plus merchants can still change is set out in Shopify checkout: what you can still change.
Ten stores and unlimited staff
Plus allows up to ten storefronts under one contract, which is the cleanest answer Shopify has to multi-region or multi-brand operation: separate stores, separate catalogues and currencies, one commercial relationship.
Compare running four Advanced stores at $299 each — $1,196 a month for four disconnected businesses with four admins and four sets of staff limits. Plus at $2,300 is not obviously worse, and it is considerably less work. Somewhere between three and five storefronts, the comparison genuinely tightens.
Unlimited staff matters at a different scale. Advanced's fifteen accounts sound generous until a business with a warehouse team, a support desk and a marketing function starts counting.
What Plus does not fix
It is still Shopify underneath, and the platform's structural limitations travel with you. The URL routing is identical — /products/ and /collections/ remain hardcoded on a $2,300 contract exactly as they are on a $29 plan. The content and blogging tools are the same thin tools. The theme layer is the same Liquid.
This catches merchants who have spent two years frustrated by a Shopify constraint and assume the enterprise tier removes it. Plus removes ceilings on staff, stores and checkout logic. It does not redesign the platform's architecture, and no conversation with a sales team will change that.
Nor does it make the store faster or better merchandised. Those are the same jobs they were on Advanced, done by the same people, and a team that has not solved them at $299 a month will not solve them at $2,300.
Who it is really for
Three shapes of business. Merchants running several storefronts, where the allowance does the work. Merchants whose checkout needs logic Advanced cannot express, which usually means bundles, complex delivery rules or multi-warehouse routing. And businesses large enough that contracted support and terms are worth paying for independently of any feature.
Who it is not for: anyone whose honest answer to why they want it is revenue-based. Crossing a revenue threshold is not a reason to buy software. Needing something the software does is.
The verdict on Plus
7.8 out of 10. Marked down not for quality — the capabilities are real and well built — but because the tier is routinely sold and bought on the wrong basis, and because a merchant cannot easily evaluate it without a sales conversation.
Write down the specific capability you need before taking the meeting. If you can name one from the list above, Plus is straightforwardly worth it. If you cannot, stay on Advanced and revisit when you can. The full platform assessment is in our Shopify review.
Pricing is quoted rather than listed, so the only way to get a real number is to ask for one through Shopify Plus and compare it against the Advanced arithmetic above.
And take the written terms seriously rather than the deck. Because Plus is negotiated, the things that actually differ between two merchants on the same tier are in the contract: the rate, the term length, what happens at renewal, and what support actually commits to. Those are the numbers to compare, not the feature list, which is identical for everybody.
